Given that this sector accounts for 13% of Spain&#8217;s GDP, its transformative power to contribute to social impact and the rights of children and adolescents is enormous due to its resources, capacity for innovation, and reach, repercussion and impact among families in general and children in particular.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u2018<strong>Hoteles<\/strong> Amigos\u2019 programme is a movement of committed and supportive companies in the sector that defend and promote children\u2019s rights among their stakeholders and society at large. They do so in two areas:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><u>Supporting UNICEF programmes for the most vulnerable children around the world:<\/u> the companies participating in the programme help UNICEF to save, protect and empower children around the world who need it most at every stage of their lives, from birth to adolescence. In addition, \u201cFriendly Hotels\u201d offer their customers the opportunity to support children, so that people staying at hotels or hotel chains affiliated with the programme can make a financial contribution to \u201cFriendly Hotels\u201d when they check in or out. Small chains and individual accommodations can also make corporate contributions directly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><u>Integrating children into their business model and ensuring protective environments for children:<\/u> companies in the hotel sector also have a great opportunity and responsibility to incorporate a child rights perspective into their business model to ensure that their activities and spaces are safe, protective and free from violence for children and adolescents, acknowledging the impact that their activities have on this specific group.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>All companies in the sector can participate in this responsible tourism movement: large and medium-sized hotel chains, individual hotels, rural accommodation providers, and hotel associations. To date, the programme has 40 hotels with more than 120 establishments throughout Spain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the critical role of the tourism and hotel sector in child protection<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UNICEF Spain&#8217;s \u201cChild-Friendly Hotels\u201d programme promotes the sector&#8217;s commitment to ensuring that its activities and spaces are safe, protective and free from violence for children and adolescents. It encourages hotels participating in the programme to be child-friendly in every way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The industry has a great opportunity to promote sustainable tourism that respects people and the planet and plays an important role in protecting children, especially in preventing violence, abuse or exploitation of children and adolescents in its spaces and operations. The sector has the opportunity to promote prevention and child protection as a distinguishing feature of the Spanish hotel and tourism industry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u2018Child Friendly Hotels\u2019 programme encourages child-friendly hotels and hotel chains to adhere to the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children and Adolescents in Travel and Tourism (\u2018<strong>The Code<\/strong>\u2019) as an international standard of good practice. The Code is a global initiative promoted since 1996 by ECPAT International in collaboration with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and UNICEF, which serves as an essential tool for ensuring that companies in the sector assume their responsibility in preventing child sexual exploitation and other forms of violence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>About supporting UNICEF programmes around the world: a comprehensive programme for children who need it most at any given time<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018Hoteles Amigos is a comprehensive programme for children, as, thanks to the support of the hotels and hotel chains that form part of it, UNICEF addresses the main areas that are fundamental for the survival and development of children: it ensures their survival, nutrition, health, protection, education and hygiene, enabling them to grow and develop to their full potential. Thus, UNICEF:<\/li>\n<li>It provides <u>protection<\/u> through safe environments that promote their development and preserve their well-being, keeping them safe from abuse, child labour, recruitment by armed groups, or child marriage.<\/li>\n<li>It guarantees <u>water, sanitation and hygiene<\/u> in emergency situations by supplying water purification tablets, water containers, latrines and basic hygiene products. It also builds water and sanitation systems that are resistant to the impacts of climate crises such as droughts or floods, and educates children on prevention and the importance of measures such as hand washing to prevent the spread of disease.<\/li>\n<li>Improves the <u>nutrition<\/u> and <u>health<\/u> of children by providing food and promoting healthy habits to prevent and treat the main causes of child mortality, including pneumonia, diarrhoea and malaria, offering all children the opportunity to grow up healthy and develop to their full potential.<\/li>\n<li>It develops programmes that promote free, high-quality and stable <u>education<\/u>, guaranteeing this right to millions of children and thus helping to break the cycle of poverty.<\/li>\n<li>It is present before, during and after <u>humanitarian emergencies<\/u>, anticipating solutions, addressing the causes of vulnerability and seeking the recovery of affected populations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The funds mobilised by the programme, which are flexible in nature, represent the most effective way to save and improve children&#8217;s lives. They enable the organisation to focus its efforts on those places that need it most: preparing for crisis or humanitarian emergencies and responding where necessary, anticipating risks and building resilience by strengthening systems such as health and education for the future.<\/li>\n<li>This support is critical given that, despite notable progress in recent decades, in many parts of the world the rights of children and adolescents are still far from being fulfilled, exposing them to situations that no child should ever have to experience.\n<ul>\n<li>Children continue to face challenges such as new and protracted conflicts, the climate crisis and growing inequality. Children are the most affected by the current crises.<\/li>\n<li>Globally, 1.2 billion children live in poverty; nearly 600 million children do not meet minimum standards for reading; 35 million children suffer from acute malnutrition;
