The Three Wise Men: A Tradition You Can’t Miss

🎁 A Celebration Full of Magic

Every January, Spain lights up with candy, joy, and excitement with the Three Wise Men. On the night of January 5th and the day of January 6th, the whole country celebrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men: three legendary figures who bring gifts, happiness, and tradition. For visitors from other countries, it can be a surprising experience: streets full of children, families waiting for the Kings, and an atmosphere that blends history, religion, and popular culture.

👑 Who Are the Three Wise Men?

The story of the Three Wise Men goes back over two thousand years. Wise men from the East followed a star that led them to Bethlehem, where they found baby Jesus and offered him three gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

🌍 Three Wise Men, Three Continents

Each Wise Man represents a part of the world known at the time and a different value:
Melchior, from Europe, brings gold.
Caspar, from Asia, brings frankincense.
Balthazar, from Africa, brings myrrh.

Together, they symbolize that the light of the world—the star they followed—shines for everyone, regardless of origin or language.

The Journey of the Star

Legend has it that the three wise men embarked on a long journey guided by a mysterious star. They crossed deserts and mountains, following their intuition, until they reached Bethlehem.

This “Star of the East” has been interpreted in many ways: as a metaphor for knowledge, a divine sign, or simply a symbol of hope.

🎠 How Did the Tradition Begin?

It is one of the most beloved celebrations in the Spanish-speaking world. In Spain, January 6th marks Epiphany, the day the Kings visited baby Jesus.

🍰 Roscón de Reyes

Before the big night, children write letters to the Wise Men asking for gifts.
On the night of January 5th, many families leave milk and cookies for the Kings and water for their camels.

And on the morning of January 6th, the big moment arrives! Gifts appear under the tree, accompanied by a very special breakfast: the Roscón de Reyes, a round cake decorated with candied fruit and filled with cream or chocolate. Hidden inside are a small figurine and a bean: whoever finds the figurine is “King of the Day,” and whoever finds the bean… buys next year’s roscón. 😄

🌟 An Experience You Must Live

Three Kings Day is more than just a religious celebration: it’s a colorful cultural spectacle full of excitement. For visitors from abroad, it’s the perfect opportunity to see a deeply Spanish tradition that brings generations together.
