If you are one of those who like to enjoy the magic of Christmas, Barcelona is your perfect destination. Whether with friends or family, come and be amazed by its streets and stores full of lights and color, the aroma of hot chocolate in the central Petritxol street, and its many celebrations and events, the most prominent of which is the arrival of Their Majesties the Magi, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar, and their entourage.
Many families travel to see the Three Wise Men in Barcelona, both in the days before, to deliver the letters of children of the house to the royal pages and be photographed with their favorite magician king, as the afternoon of January 5 for the parade of Barcelona.
Each district of the city organizes its own parade, but the most spectacular is the one organized by the City Council (here we leave you all the information). To enjoy the floats and choreographies in all its splendor and to see the whole parade, although it starts at 6 pm we recommend to be an hour earlier along the route, which this year has been modified by various works in the usual route.
For shopping lovers, Barcelona also has a wide range of proposals. The most typical among the locals is the Santa Llúcia Fair (Santa Lucia in Spanish). It’s the oldest Christmas market in the city and is held every year around the Cathedral of Barcelona. But if you prefer to avoid the crowds of the city center, the perfect choice of Christmas market is the Sagrada Familia Fair, located around the Basilica designed by Gaudí.
Depending on how the calendar falls, both fairs start at the end of November or the first days of December. This year they’ll be open until December 23. Their stalls sell everything from the most traditional items and objects, such as figurines for nativity scenes, Christmas ornaments, trees and the famous Tió de Nadal, to a wide variety of handcrafted gift items.
Another of the classics of Barcelona is the Kings Fair located in different sections of the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, between Calabria and Muntaner streets. This year it starts on December 16 until January 6, so it is ideal for strolling around during the Christmas vacations.
Originally, the stalls that made it up only sold toys and candy, but today you can find gifts, crafts, clothing and accessories for all tastes and ages. It’s the best option for last minute shopping, especially to try to find toys out of stock in specialty stores. It is also typical to surrender to the sweet temptation offered by the different show of churros participating in the fair.
