Eco-Hostel en Barcelona
At Twentytú Hostel we are committed to the environment and we carry out different sustainable actions. Thanks to BIOSPHERE we have developed a personalised sustainability plan, based on making efficient use of resources such as water and electricity. We work to offer a better future to the most disadvantaged sectors of society through our collaborations with different foundations. This is why we have obtained the Biosphere certificate for Responsible Tourism.
What is sustainable tourism?
For us, sustainability means caring about the planet and taking positive action for it. It’s putting ourselves in the place of nature and people to make the world a healthier and more respectful place.
Today, a lot of resources are used in an uncontrolled way without taking into account the impacts on the Earth, while climate change is revolutionising everything. More sectors of society are disadvantaged and there is more inequality between people.
For this reason, we have joined the cause with the United Nations in its initiative, which encompasses 17 Sustainable Development Goals. At Twentytú Hostel Barcelona we are implementing 15 of these 17 goals.

End of poverty
Reception of refugee families or political exiles, in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department of Barcelona City Council.
Zero Hunger
Donation of unused food from our events and caterings to the parish of our district.
Health and well-being
Bicycle rental and organisation of sports activities, such as yoga, to promote healthy living.
Quality education
Educational and didactic initiative in the organisation of technical visits for student groups to companies in the technology, engineering, architecture and design sectors.
Gender equality
Offering equal employment opportunities for our entire team.
Clean water and sanitation
Grey water system, which recovers water from showers and sinks for treatment and reuse in toilet flushing. In this way, we obtain 470,000 litres of water per year for times of drought in the world.
Affordable and non-polluting energy
Air-conditioning and water heating system operating in a sustainable, non-polluting way
Decent work and economic growth
Doubling the number of workers compared to our beginnings, and the possibility of job promotion.
Industry, innovation and infrastructure
- Ventilated façade that optimizes air conditioning and prevents overheating in the rooms
- Home automation system that controls the temperature, and use of technological devices to control efficient electricity management
Reduction of inequalities
- Collaboration with the IReS Foundation, where we offer training and work to young people at risk of exclusion.
- Contributions to the Click scholarships, a training programme of the IReS Foundation to promote development and social skills through technological training.
Sustainable cities and communities
Participation in cultural events in the Poblenou neighbourhood.
- Annual donations to different foundations that help the most vulnerable people and the environment.
- Commitment to recycling
- Location in the 22@ district, the technological area of Barcelona, considered Smart City 3.0
- Collaboration with the Sant Tomàs Foundation, of the 3rd sector, in the design of the decoration of the parking, soon, in the decoration of the double rooms and dining room.
- Commissioning of merchandising to Icaria Gráficas, from the 3rd sector.
- Offering free accommodation to volunteer doctors on surgical internships at the Ulls del món Foundation.
Responsible production and consumption
- Efficient use of light with presence detectors in the corridors, regulation of the intensity of the light according to the time and number of guests, and light timer in the rooms.
- Efficient and responsible use of water with timers in showers and taps, saving the planet between 40% and 60% of water.
- Replacing plastic breakfast confectionery with glass
- Offering picnics in paper-cardboard bags.
- Catering in biodegradable packaging
Climate action
- Use of environmentally friendly energy
- Motion detector for light and reduction of CO2 impact
Underwater Life
Collaboration with Surfrider in the cleaning of the Barcelona beach to protect the natural habitat of marine animals and reduce CO2 emissions.
Partnerships to achieve the objectives
Offering free accommodation and transport to Lampedusa Hamburg FC, formed by young refugees, for their integration into society and sport, avoiding the creation of gangs, in collaboration with City to City Barcelona FAD Award.

Best responsible tourism venture
International Responsible Tourism Awards that distinguish good practices in the tourism industry.
Best green initiative
Winner in 2014 in the Green Accommodation Initiative category, which rewards establishments that show initiative in sustainability.
Best responsible tourism entrepreneurship
This award is given to hostels involved in eco-friendly projects and practices. Our hostel won the first prize in 2014.
